More Party Blab
Gillian G. Gaar
Party news…nothing terribly thrilling to report, but I know how much you cherish reading anything along these lines, so...
So, last Friday I went to see “Final Cut,” about the making of “Heaven’s Gate” (and the unmaking of Hollywood). Who should turn up but Kathy Fennessy. Who should further turn up but Tom Kipp. They were going to Bill’s Off Broadway afterwards, and invited me, so I went we had a nice little confab. Steven was there, Sean Axmaker showed up, and I think it’s Robert, copyright expert and lawyer. Everyone yakking about films, music, Freddie Mercury, Klaus Nomi. I learned Tom was going to the Malfunkshun doc the next night, so I invited him to escort me to that night’s gala.
The gala was for the film “Bombon: El Perro,” an Argentinan film Carl Spence has described to me as “very sweet” so I suppose it must be. But the film was held up at customs, so they screened something else. (They are showing “Bombon” later in the week though). The party was held at Con Works, site of last year’s Donnie Darko debaucherous party, but there was nothing like that this year. In the first place, they didn’t open up the entire space. And fewer people.
Tom hadn’t been to one of these galas before, and he was pleased to see there were plenty of drinkies (champagne, red wine, Pyramid, Bombay Sapphire, Pyramid sodas) and food. I chanced the Bombay Gin, and these bartenders were very light w/it (I tried at least to get them to put less tonic in, w/no success), so only attained a state of minimal drunkeness. Tom’s a great person to take to parties, because you can introduce him to anybody and he will find a way to engage them in conversation. And he has one of the most amazing music collections in Seattle. Talked w/platinum passholder Ray, who teased me about my Naomi Watts obsession. Talked to publicists Karen Hansen, who was wearing a great shirt w/multiple Elvis’ (Elvi?), and Britt, briefly Gary Tucker. Talked with Karen a lot about music, and Seattle music stuff. Surprised to see Pano, or Panno, who I think is from Italy, he says he’s getting to really like Seattle, wanted to know about the Secret Fest, wanted to know about where people got the SIFF bags they were carrying around (no Pano, they weren’t free!), etc. Had a nice talk w/Joy, a bartender from last year, who remembered me. She has a Donnie Darko obsession and wants to show us the original cut, which she prefers, and provide commentary on why it’s better. Tom and I agreed we’d love to be there for such an evening; as I said, “You, alcohol, Donnie Darko…what’s not to love?” So, get in touch w/us again Joy! Saw Helen, Carl, Andy Spletzer. There was a band, playing quietly in the background. Oh yes, saw I believe it’s Robert Knott, who appeared in “Swimmers” that he urged us to see. I’m sorry I missed the screenings, I had another engagement to keep. He told us a bit about what it was like to be an actor working (or trying to) in LA, he’s done a number of films. He was in “Pollock,” said that film really didn’t get good distro. We are lucky to live in Seattle.
Tom and I left at a decent hour. Sorry it wasn’t more exciting….
