Briefly: Everyone Stares, This Film Not Rated, Wordplay

Gillian G. Gaar

My arms were bothering me of late, so I've been absent, and I'm going to keep this pretty short...

First, I have only been invited to one SIFF party so far! Oh, lamentation. If anyone has invites and needs a "plus one," do let me know.

Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out
May 31, Egyptian, 7 pm
June 2, Neptune, 4:30 pm

This is a great, if too short, doc that traces the career of the Police from 1978 to 1982. It's shot by the band's drummer, Stewart Copeland, with his own Super 8 camera, and he provides very wry and self-deprecating narration. I enjoyed it, even though I'm not the biggest Police fan. Gee, isn't it any fun being in a world-famous band? Note that Stewart will participate in a "Conversation With..." session at the May 31 screening, which has been moved to the Egypto.

This Film Has Not Been Rated
May 27, Egyptian, 9:30 pm

There is sadly only one screening of this. The film looks at the double-standards applied in handing out ratings (gay sex: NC-17; hetero sex: R) by the mysterious MPAA folks. Who are they? No one knows. So director Kirby Dick does what anyone with an inquiring mind would do — hires a private investigator to find out! Plus there are interviews with folks like John Waters and Matt Stone. Trust me, this will be a ton of fun to watch with a SIFF audience! Mr. Dick will also be in attendance.

Wordplay

May 28, Neptune, 6:30 pm

This is a doc about crossword puzzles (specifically The New York Times puzzle) and the people who love them. These folks even have a yearly tournament. Who knew? Interesting, but if you miss the SIFF screening I'd say wait for the DVD.

Now to make myself beautiful for Opening Night. I did get a haircut. I'll be wearing my silver leather jacket, so if you see me, say hi.

I enjoyed 'This Film is Not Yet Rated". What an ass Valente is can never be mentioned enough. I did find it fascinating his name isn't mentioned in the SIFF catalog listing. Waters is just too much! I can't decide which I like more, his movies or listening to him in an interview. All said, I don't think this film brings any significant revelations to the table. They manage to 'out' several MPAA raters which drew huge laughter and applause at the screening Saturday night, and the way the material is presented is very funny ( recall the humping counter? ), but it's all been heard before. Now 'bringing down the MPAA' would make a worthy subject for a documentary. I'd even kick in a buck for that cause!
