"They made a desert, and they called it peace."

Ambitious and well-intended, Bobby attempts a level of complexity that becomes scattered and difficult to follow, while lacking adequate character development. In this fictitious recounting of a ‘day-in-the-life’ within LA’s Ambassador Hotel on June 6, 1968, leading up to Robert F. Kennedy’s assassination, director Emilio Estevez trivializes a devastating moment in America’s social consciousness with drug humor and sex. Punctuated by archival film of actual events that remain heartbreakingly traumatic for anyone old enough to remember, Bobby simultaneously creates a pop, trite, commercialized distortion of history for those who are not. Certainly, there are profound and moving vignettes within the whole, but Estevez’ attempt to fabricate a national mythology and conjure greatness by reclaiming something unattainable reveals his failure. For the Kennedy acolytes, this is merely backslapping. For the Right Bobby is something to be ignored. More importantly, the question that begs asking is what real purpose does this film serve?
