Donald Sosin Unplugged

David Jeffers

Back in the day … Kenyon Hall, once upon a time,
The Olympic Heights Social Club.

Old Wood
Popular silent film accompanist Donald Sosin returned to the Puget Sound area last week for a two-stop, four-show tour, beginning with two nights at West Seattle’s Kenyon Hall. Wednesday’s program featured two-reelers from Laurel and Hardy, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and the hilarious Hal Roach short Pass the Gravy (1928), starring Max Davidson. Thursday night’s selections included three Biograph shorts, two directed by D. W. Griffith and all three filmed by cinematographer G. W. ‘Billy’ Bitzer, followed by Hungry Hearts (1922), a Sam Goldwyn production. Introductions provided by Seattle’s favorite silent film historian Richie Meyer were followed by Sosin’s lightning-fast demonstrations at the piano before each show.
This was my first visit to Kenyon Hall, a West Seattle institution, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Pre-show entertainment featured the 2/13 Wurlitzer, which has been installed with all ranks out in the open, giving this small 150 seat wood-frame building an acoustic brightness not found in bigger venues. Host Lou Magor and his gang of cheerful volunteers provide a family friendly ‘neighborhood’ atmosphere and an endless supply of $1 root beer floats with ice cream "made by elves." My only criticism was the 24fps the Biograph films were screened at on Thursday night, due to the type of projector used. The easy remedy for a lack of variable speed projection would be to stick with programs of late silent era films produced for screening at sound speed. I certainly hope to see many more evenings of silent film at Kenyon Hall in the future.

Sosin has tentative plans to return in January for a show in Port Townsend and hopefully again for SIFF 2007.

Next …

Sunday in Port Townsend
