Silent Nights
David Jeffers

The Winter Season of archival silent film out West begins this evening amid the gothic splendor of Nob Hill’s landmark Grace Cathedral with a special presentation of Universal Pictures’ 1923 blockbuster, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Based on Victor Hugo’s epic novel and starring the master of silent horror Lon Chaney, this film set in the church, seen in church, should make for an unforgettable New Year’s celebration. Those Episcopalians really know how to party!
Seattle Theater Group kicks off the return of their popular and long running, Silent Movie Mondays with The Hunchback next week, from the Beaux-Arts elegance of The Paramount Theater.
STG’s series continues with the beautiful and very creepy Rex Ingram film The Magician, starring Paul Wegener and Alice Terry (Mrs. Ingram), followed by The Bells, a tale of murder and consequences starring Lionel Barrymore and Boris Karloff. Wegener returns in the fourth and final Silent Movie Monday as Der Golem, a mythological Ashkenazi monster, whose influence on James Whale’s Frankenstein is unmistakable.
