The Road to Guantanamo

The Road to Guantanamo is the latest offering from director Michael Winterbottom (A Cock and Bull Story, 24 Hour Party People). It is a fine example of that worst sort of vague misrepresentation in film entertainment today, the docu-drama. Four young men, ethnic Pakistanis from suburban England, travel to Karachi in the fall of 2001 for a wedding. Once there, they become entangled in the escalating post 9/11 mess with the Taliban and eventually end up incarcerated as American prisoners at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. While there is no question that real atrocities have been committed by the United States at this base and in other parts of the world, this film does damage to any credible truth if it ever surfaces by blurring the lines between fiction and reality. Combining actual interviews and reinactments of events with no clear explanation encourages confusion, regardless of the film makers good intentions.
