The Warrior

David Jeffers

Saturday June 4, 9:30pm Neptune Theater
Sunday June 5, 4:15pm Neptune Theater

Lafcadia is the deadly and obedient right arm of an Indian feudal warlord. Sent to massacre a village for failing to pay their tribute he brings the mayhem of retribution. As he washes the blood from his hands he grows a conscience and swears to never kill again. His young son is kidnapped by the warlord and murdered in public before Lafcadia’s eyes. Committed to pacifism he seeks no revenge but rather takes flight only to be hunted for his insubordination. A journey of escape, penance and mystical vision The Warrior has a rich palette of warm tones and bright sensual color with a shallow depth of field photographic style that makes the image on screen seem three dimensional. Vague and poorly defined characters dropping in and out of the story make it confusing and hard to follow while the plot is amazingly thin. Still, The Warrior is a visual feast of fable and myth through the scorching desert to the snowy Himalayas.
Fans of Bandit Queen and other regional Indian film will find The Warrior well worth a look.

The following feature Sunday night was Chaplin’s The Circus. A wonderful film in a magnificent theater. The audience loved it roaring with laughter from start to finish. I was very surprised by the scratched, beat up print shown after so much media hype and attention was given to this presentation. A house full of children and adults laughing their asses off clearly demonstrates why Chaplin is as relevant today as he was in 1928.
